Many motorists aim to stick to the speed limit while driving on the country's roads, but end up exceeding it involuntarily, it has been found.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) carried out a study, which found this is the case for 90 per cent of people, despite the negative impact it could have on their car insurance premiums.

Director of policy Neil Greig commented: "The results suggest that people are aware of the limit and don't want to break it, but temptation and pressure from other traffic may push them to go faster."

He added that it is reassuring that so many people set out with the intention of keeping within the speed limit.

The statistics showed that people are most likely to slow down if they see a police presence by the side of the road.

It was recently emphasised by the IAM that students heading off to university need to ensure their cars are packed properly, as failure to secure items could lead to prosecution.
